Like most Aussie blokes I’ve always enjoyed playing sport (cricket, football, golf) but I never caught the cycling or running bug. Some years ago, a good friend of mine tried to impart some of his enthusiasm for cycling, and it was on what can only be described as a training ride (all that was missing were the training wheels), that he told me about his good friends Nick and Jodi Lee and the battle that Jodi had bravely fought against bowel cancer. I sensed even back then that Andrew was determined to be involved in something to raise awareness about this horrible disease.Through Andrew I’ve followed The Jodi Lee Foundation, as he rode his bike from Melbourne to Adelaide and a year later from Canberra to Melbourne. Last year, his wife Donna ran the New York Marathon for The Jodi Lee Foundation too. “No way”, I thought, “could I possibly do such a thing”.But in the last few years I’ve lost some friends to cancer – not much older than me and with young families like mine. I knew I had to do something. So, inspired by people like Nick Lee, Andrew Poole, Donna Harding and the many people I’ve seen over the years touched by cancer, I’ve signed up to run the New York Marathon on 4 November.Cancer (of any sort) is an insidious disease, but we go a long way to beating it with early detection and screening – especially bowel cancer. If nothing else, I hope that by running the New York Marathon I can increase awareness, especially among people my age, of early detection.  And of course to raise funds for The Jodi Lee Foundation!I never had the pleasure of meeting Jodi Lee but it will be an honor to run through New York in her name. Please give generously!
