I love the way that my life has been a jumbled sequence of adventures, grasping opportunities as they arise, holding my breath to see where my decisions will carry me. And so the adventure continues with a fleeting decision to run the 2014 New York City Marathon and raise funds for the Jodi Lee Foundation.
My attitude until about 8 years ago was that I couldn’t run, I wasn’t a runner, and that runners were all a bit mad. Actually come to think of it, my opinion of myself as a runner and of runners in general haven’t really changed much in that time. What has changed, is that I started running. And I kept running. I love the saying: ‘I’m a runner because I run. Not because I run fast. Not because I run far’. I realised that anyone can be a runner. So now I am, and over the past 8 years I’ve participated in countless fun runs (who would have thought those two words could occur in the same sentence?!), training runs, half marathons and even a full marathon.

But the process of becoming a “runner” for me isn’t really about running. It’s about pushing my boundaries, stepping out of my comfort zone, exceeding my limits and then going a little bit further. My inspiration to do this comes from the incredible people in my life who have pushed through the toughest of times and fought to stay alive against the odds. If they have the strength to overcome such adversity, then surely I can poke my head out from underneath my little security blanket and fight alongside them?

My father was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2008, and with the help of an amazing team and the support from those around him he pulled through to be the active, fit, healthy and inspirational father that I still have to this day. I have been exposed to the trauma and heartbreak that cancer brings with it on many occasions within my extended family and close friends. The crazy thing is that this is now the norm – cancer does not discriminate, none of us are immune, and we will all continue to be impacted regardless of who we are or what we do.

Through my running, I feel like I can make that small contribution to increasing awareness and raising funds for research into prevention and treatment of this disease that can tear apart our lives in an instant. Can you imagine a world without cancer? I can, and just maybe if I can help bring it into the spotlight for a moment, I can reduce the pain felt by others in the future. I am passionate about fitness, healthy eating, life balance, inner wellness and most of all about educating people about how these things are possible and achievable in everyday life, for every one of us.

When I run in November, I’ll be running in memory of those we’ve lost, in support of those still fighting, and in hope for a healthier future for us all.
